The action of different forms of pure silica on the lungs of rats.

چکیده
Pure silica (SiO, ) exists at room temperature in the four different modifications: quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, and fused silica. The first three are crystalline, but fused silica is a non-crystalline solid, a glass. Tridymite, cristobalite, and fused silica are metastable, but at room temperature they do not invert within measurable time to the only thermodynamically stable modification, quartz. It can be regarded as proven that quartz can produce tissue changes in the lungs of animals similar to those found in human silicosis. It was also thought up to quite recently that silica was unique in producing such changes. Experiments with rand 1quartz (King, Rogers, Gilchrist, and Nagelschmidt, 1945) had shown that there was no difference in the action of either of the optically active forms from the effect of the racemic type. It was thought desirable next to test the effect of the four different modifications of silica under comparable conditions. The only previous information in this field came from Gardner (1938) who had injected rabbits by the ear vein with 1 g. lots and had found progressive nodular fibrosis of the liver with quartz and fused silica, but a more severe diffuse fibrosis with cristobalite and a still more rapid reaction with tridymite which resulted in the death of all his animals within three months or less. Gardner stated that his samples were analysed and were all below 3 micron diameter, but he did not give any results of analyses or counts. We decided to make comparable sized fractions of the four silica modifications and to use them for intratracheal injection into rats in order to study the effect of the crystal structure on the type and amount of tissue reaction.

Background: Silica nanoparticles could enter the living animals and humans through inhalation, ingestion, injection and skin, exerting potentially adverse effects on health and environment. The aim of this experimental laboratory study was to evaluate toxicities of silica nanoparticles in the form of wire, rod and sphere with different sizes (20, 50 and 100 nm) on rat pulmonary cells after 6 an...

In this study a series of epoxy/silica nanocomposites were prepared by using nano silica particles which had different surface modifications. The morphology of the nanocomposite coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy SEM. The effects of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic feature of the nano particles on the Tg and anticorrosive properties of nanocomposite coatings were evaluate...

Various concentrations of copper were embedded into silica matrix to xerogel forms using copper source Cu(NO3)2∙3H2O. The xerogel samples were prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of Tetraethyl Ortho-Silicate (TEOS) with determination of new molar ratio of the components by the sol-gel method. After ambient drying, the xerogel samples were heated from 60 to 1000˚C at a slow heating rate (50°...
متن کاملInvestigation on Mechanism of Cordierite Formation from Nano Silica-Magnesium chloride-Reactive Alumina
Cordierite ceramics are used as refractory materials and kiln furnaces tools due to their very low coefficient of thermal expansion, high corrosion resistance and excellent thermal shock resistance. The aim of the present work was to synthesis of cordierite with raw materials including nano silica, magnesium chloride and reactive alumina. The synthesis procedure is done at solid state. Mechanis...

Introduction: Reducing noise pollution has become an essential issue due to the increase in public concern and also social demands for a better lifestyle. Using sound absorption materials is a preferred method to reduce the noise pollution. Undesirable properties of pure polyurethane such as poor absorption of mechanical energy in narrow frequency ranges can be improved by providing polymeric n...
